Note: The SW gloss cites Confucius explaining 狗 in terms of the bark of a dog, with a pun on 叩/扣 kòu ‘rein in (control/lead a horse/etc.); strike/attack; etc.’, as in 扣气 ‘to bark’ (of a guard dog, barking a warning), cf. 句 gōu (HDZ).
Note: In the modern form 狗 the component is 句 (not 勾).
