The Shuōwén Seal form of 鼠 shǔ ‘rodent/mouse/rat’ is said to derive from old pictographs depicting the animal, with its head/mouth/teeth wr. like jiù ‘mortar’ (for grinding, i.e. gnawing), its feet/claws wr. rather like as in other animal graphs such as 鹿, or , and a line on the right for the back/tail.
    Compare: liè ‘furry/hairy (beast/mane)’; / liè ‘hunt’.
Compare: / cuàn ‘scurry off’ (lie a rat into its hole); in the simple form the rat 鼠 is abbrev. as chuàn ‘pierce’ (phonosemantic).
    Compare: 齿/ chǐ ‘tooth/teeth’ (齿 ‘molars’).
“Rat, rodents in general; 。。The head, the stiff whiskers, and the tail. The ancient character represented the animal” —Wieger.
