(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character is a minor variant of the full-form character 沒, replacing the old right-side component 𠬛/𣴬 (mò) with a shape like (shū).
Note: Today mainly méi ‘not have, have no’ (as in méiyǒu ‘not have; there is not; be without’); formerly /沒(􁻫𣴬) mò ‘sink/drown’.
Note: In the simple form the right-side component conflates two old characters, formerly distinguished as (􀠬𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’, vs. (􀡜) shū ‘lance/stab/flail’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of /沒(􁻫𣴬) mò ‘sink/drown’ combines ( shuǐ) ‘water’ (river), and (􀠬𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. (􀠬𠬸𠬛).
Note: (􀠬𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’, in which the upper part is (􁃷􁃶) huí ‘vortex/whirlpool’, and the lower part (􀠋) yòu ‘hand’ (of the sinking/drowning man).
    Compare: (􀫨𣨏歿􀫧) mò ‘to die’.
“[] To dive, while turning on one’s self, in order to (􀠋) get something under water, the head being below; 。。。By extension, to disappear, to be no more” —Wieger.
    Compare: 沿(􁻙) yán ‘flow down/along’.
