(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The Shuōwén Seal form of /說(􀙯) shuō ‘narrate/expound’ (formerly also / yuè ‘happy/joyful’) combines (􀘢) yán ‘direct speech’, and (􁝖) duì/yuè ‘happy/joyful’ (phonosemantic): joyfully tell a happy tale, offer an interesting analysis.
Compare: /(􂃪) yuè ‘go through (inventory/count; experience)’, in which /說 (abbrev. phonetic), or else just / (phonetic).
    Compare: /(􁝖) duì/yuè ‘happy/joyful’, which is said to be an old wr. of / yuè ‘happy/joyful’ (cf. , , ☱); cf. (􀵉􀵇).
In the modern simple form , the full-form component becomes , and (ears-in) becomes (ears-out).
Note: Some say that in the component represents () ‘cries/songs/words of joy’ coming from the ‘mouth’ of a ‘person’, and hence ‘to speak’.
Note: Unicode encodes three forms: (PRC simple), 說 (ROC full); (HDC/PRC full); 說/ (at least) would have been unified, but for Source Separation.
Note: Wenlin treats 說 (with ) as the standard (ROC) full form, though (with ) is preferred in PRC publications (HDZ, HDC).
Note: The full form of the component (􁝖) is more similar to the Shuōwén Seal form, with (ears-in) at the top, rather than 𠮦 (ears-out).
