(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 没:) The simple-form character 没 is a minor variant of the full-form character 沒, replacing the old right-side component 𠬛/𣴬 (mò) with a shape like 殳 (shū).
Note: Today mainly 没 méi ‘not have, have no’ (as in 没有 méiyǒu ‘not have; there is not; be without’); formerly 没/沒(𣴬) mò ‘sink/drown’.
Note: In the simple form 没 the right-side component 殳 conflates two old characters, formerly distinguished as 殳(𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’, vs. 殳() shū ‘lance/stab/flail’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 没/沒(𣴬) mò ‘sink/drown’ combines 氵(水 shuǐ) ‘water’ (river), and 殳(𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 殳(𠬸𠬛).
Note: 殳(𠬸𠬛) mò ‘sink/drown’, in which the upper part is 囘(回) huí ‘vortex/whirlpool’, and the lower part 又() yòu ‘hand’ (of the sinking/drowning man).
