Two horizontal strokes symbolizing the number ‘two’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 二(􂘚) èr ‘two’ combines a pair of horizontal strokes symbolizing the number two; two is said to be the number of 地(􂘣) dì ‘earth’ (cf. 土 tǔ), relative to 一(􀀀) yī ‘one’ the number of 天(􀀃) tiān ‘heaven’; as a component in other Shuōwén characters, the two lines of 二(􂘚) èr ‘two’ are said to represent heaven above and earth below, cf. 五(􂤙𠄡); enlarged writings (大写) include the old form 弍(􂘛), and 贰(􁄱貳).
