The Shuōwén Seal form of 然(𤌔) rán ‘burn/roast/cook (dog/meat)’ (now ‘thus/natural’) combines 肰 rán ‘dog meat’ (phonosemantic), and 灬(火) huǒ ‘(cooking) fire’; formerly wr. 䖄(䕼) with 難/㸐 (phonetic), the ‘fire’ component was sometimes omitted, since it was already an inner part of 難(𩁘); today the old sense is wr. 燃 rán ‘roast/cook’ (燃烧) with an extra fire on the left.
    Note: The old meaning of 然 is now wr. 燃 ‘burn/roast/cook’ (as in 燃烧 ránshāo), and modern usage is for 然 ‘so/thus, like that, correct/suitable; nature/natural’.

    Compare: 炙 zhì ‘roast’ (炙烤).
    Note: In the modern form 然, the 月(肉 ròu) ‘flesh/meat’ component of 肰 is wr.  as in 炙, not 爫(爪) as in 䍃.
