The Shuōwén Seal form of 日 rì ‘sun/day’ derives from old drawings of the circular disk of the sun (), with a central line ⚊ yáng ‘male principle’ () representing a ray/beam of light (the interior substance of the sun is evident as pure light); in some old graphs the central line is written as a dot instead, and in the old form 𡆠 a curved central line suggests ☯ (, the union of ⚋/⚊), since the sun is also the source of the ⚋ yīn ‘female principle’ ().
Note: The SW gloss for 日 rì ‘sun’ (MC /ȵiet/ ← OC /njit/) puns on / shí ‘true/real; fruit’ (MC /dʑiet/ ← OC /Ljit/), since the sun drives plant life/growth, and is the source of fruit/food (real sustenance).
Compare: (𠻖) xīng ‘star’, which suggests that the 日 rì ‘sun’ was anciently recognized as a star.
Note: In 日 rì ‘sun’ the central line touches the left and right sides; in yuē ‘say’ the central line does not touch on the right side (except in some compound characters).
Compare: yuē ‘say’ (often identical to 日 rì as a component); (𤮺) gān ‘sweet’; yuè ‘moon’.
Compare: míng ‘dusk/evening’ (SW: ‘dark; waning gibbous moon’), in which 日 is said to wr. shí ‘ten’ (or depict a full moon).
Compare: Mì (river name), in which the component 日 rì is said to be míng (abbrev. phonetic); cf. mì (HDZ), under which it is said that 日 was anciently read .
Compare: / niǎo ‘bird’, / wū ‘crow’; /(𢒠𢒗) mǎ ‘horse’.
日 is the 72nd of the 214 radicals.
