(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 关:) The simple-form character 关 guān (6 strokes) is said to be an old variant of 笑 (关⿱八天 xiào), or a variant of 𠔉 (juàn), re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 關 (19 strokes), formerly abbrev. 関.
The full-form character 關 guān ‘shut’ (with 𢇇), formerly also wr. 𨶚 (with 𢇅), was abbrev. 関, and later simply 关.
Note: 关 ← 関 ← 關(𨶚); cf. 关/關 guān ‘shut’, 𠔉 juàn ‘roll/ball up’.
