The Shuōwén Seal form of 係 jì/xì ‘tie/bind’ combines 亻(人 rén) ‘person’, and 系 xì ‘link/bind’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 系, the form 係 was created to distinguish ‘tie’ meanings of 系 from ‘link’.
Note: 係 does not occur among simple form characters, 系 is always used instead (cf. 系).
Compare: 繫 jì ‘inferior silk/cloth’, jì/xì ‘tie/bind/link’.
Note: MC homophones 係, 繫, 繼 jì (音 “計”) (SBGY).
