(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 单:) The simple-form character 单 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 單 (12 strokes), replacing the upper full-form component 吅 (6 strokes) with丷 (2 strokes).
Note: In 单/單 the simplification of 丷/吅 is that of 兽/嘼/獸; cf. 兽.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 单/單() dān ‘great (beast)’ combines the shape (⿱田十), short for 黾/黽() měng ‘frog/amphibian’ (cf. 兽/嘼), with 吅() xuān ‘cry/roar’ (phonosemantic); [lacuna].
Note: 單() is an old wr. of 鼍/鼉(𪓸) tuó ‘alligator’, and of 战/戰() zhàn ‘battle/war’, phonosemantic in both; SW records that alligator skin was used to make (war) drums.
Compare: 𬶛/鱓 tuó ‘alligator’, formerly wr. 鼍/鼉(𪓸); 𬶛/鱓() shàn ‘Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus)’.
Compare: 兽/獸(嘼) shòu ‘beast’, in which 吅 represents the curved horns, not 吅() xuān ‘cry/roar’; but in the Seal the central part of 兽/嘼() is the same as 单/單().
