The Shuōwén forms 於(𡖗) and 𡗃 are said to be old variants of 乌(烏) wū ‘crow’ (depicting the bird); 於 was used to wr. an exclamation 于/亏/於乎/呼 (乌/呜呼) wūhū ‘wow; alas’ (onomatopoeic, after the cry of the bird; cf. 於戲/熙), and was also used to wr. 于 yú (prep./aux.)’.
Among simple form characters, 於 is retained only for the surname Yū.
Note: The left-side component in the old shapes 於(𡖗) and 𡗃 may relate to Confucian myths about 三足烏 Sānzúwū (the Three-Legged Crow which lives in the sun; cf. 烏).
Wieger wrote that 於 “has certainly nothing in common with 㫃. It is probably not an arbitrary contraction of 乌 wū. It seems to be a modern sign, invented to be used as a particle expressing the relation that exists between two terms of a proposition. It represents graphically the connection (left side) between 二 two distinct 刀 terms.” [If it is “a modern sign”, then “modern” means after Shuōwén (121 AD)?]
Karlgren (AD) noted that the word was pronounced yū (in the first tone), and that the reading yú for 於 “is due to confusion with the synonymous but not etymologically identical 于”; he also recognized it as the same word as 呜 wū in old texts.
