(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 舆:) The simple-form character 舆 (14 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 輿 (17 strokes), replacing the full-form component 車 (7 strokes) with its simple form 车 (4 strokes).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 舆/輿() yú ‘(covered/curtained/private) sedan chair’ (肩舆) combines 车/車 (chē) ‘cart/carriage’, and 舁(𦥠) yú ‘carry together’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 𨏮/轝 yù ‘lift/carry a sedan chair’ (HDZ).

Note: A sedan chair (a.k.a. palki/palanquin) is a kind of covered/curtained single-passenger carriage/litter (without wheels) carried on poles by porters/slaves/servants (or pack animals); various kinds were distinguished by size (number of porters), construction (simple litters vs. more elaborate sedan chairs), use (royal/official/common/bridal/etc.), and the degree of privacy/luxury afforded (cf. 官轿, 民轿, 肩舆).
