Picture of a kind of weapon, compare 戈 gē. In the oracle bone writing, the character had already been borrowed for the first person pronoun ‘I’, for unknown reasons (possibly a phonetic loan).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 我(􂍪) wǒ ‘I/we; me/us; my/our’ is said to combine 戈(􂍍) gē ‘halberd/lance-axe’ (personal protection, self defense) (phonosemantic), and a component identified as either 𢏒(􁃖􁃕𠂹) chuí ‘dangerous/remote border area’ (abbrev.), or else an old wr. of 殺(􀡱􀡴𢽅􀡵𢁛) shā ‘kill’; formerly wr. 𢦠(􂍫), with a shape like the serrated 刀/刃 knife/edge (of a reaping hook) on the right side of old 𥝢(􀯛􀯚利) lì ‘reap/profit’ (personal gain).
Compare: 陲(􂤁𨼦) chuí ‘dangerous/remote border area/place’ (where one distinguishes oneself), formerly wr. 垂(􂚼𡍮), 𠂹(􁃕).
