The Shuōwén Seal form of 六 liù ‘six’ is said to combine 亠/入 rù ‘enter into’, and 八 bā ‘eight/divide’ (⚋); in the Book of Changes (易) the number six is the number of the changing/unstable ⚋ yīn ‘female line’ (阴); when the broken ⚋ yīn ‘female line’ changes, it closes/heals to become a solid ⚊ yáng ‘male line’ 阳; the upper component 入 represents the bringing together of the two halves of the female line, closing the gap between them, joining the two parts together, as the top of 亼 jí ‘gather/together’ (集), as in 合 hé ‘combine/together’; the two dots at the bottom of 六 correspond to 八 bā ‘eight/divide’, the broken yīn line (⚋), as in 四(𠃢𦉭) sì ‘four’.
Older graphs associated with 六 (as in HDZ) are similar to the SW Seal form of 六, which is best understood in relation to the old form 𦉭(𠃢) sì ‘four’; in 六 the top part 亠 corresponds to the top two lines of ☴ (binary 6), the bottom of which is wr. 八 (⚋); the old form 𦉭(𠃢) sì ‘four’ (☶ binary 4) is an abbrev. of 六, omitting the top dot/line.
