The character 直 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of old forms such as 𥄂, merging the old lower components (⿱目一) into the shape (6 strokes), not 且 (5 strokes).
Note: Formerly wr. 𥄂, with a bottom horizontal stroke 一 derived from old 𠃊/𠃑 (1 stroke), as seen in old forms of 德(憄悳惪).
