The Shuōwén Seal form of 農(䢉) nóng ‘plowing/plowman’ (耕 ‘plowing’, DYC: 耕人 ‘plowman’) is said to combine 䢅 chén ‘Scorpio; spring/dawn’ (plowing), and 𦥓(凶) xiōng ‘breast/heart star, Antares’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𨑋, 𦦥, 辳.
Note: The phonetic component 𦥓(凶) is debated/disputed in various SW editions; as with 䅶 ‘hoe’, agricultural associations relate to old time-keeping usages of the star/constellation name 辰 chén ‘Scorpio/Antares’; the heart star Antares (心宿) of the Celestial Scorpion rising pre-dawn in the springtime announced the time of the spring plowing; cf. 晨(曟), 䢅.
In the common modern full form 農 the top component 曲 (6 strokes) is an abbrev. of the old component ⿲𠀉囟彐 (13 strokes) in 䢉; in the variant form 𨑇 this same component is abbrev. to 覀, as in 要(𡢗), 䙴(𠨧), 票(𤐫).
Compare: 𦦥, 𦦤, 𣎭; these are old variants of 農, in which 甘/廿/曲 is an old variant of 辰, the curved/segmented scorpion tail/stinger.

The full-form character 農 (13 strokes) is an abbrev. of older forms such as 䢉 (20 strokes), cf. 農(䢉).
