The character 直 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of old forms such as 𥄂, merging the old lower components (⿱目一) into the shape  (6 strokes), not 且 (5 strokes).
    Note: Formerly wr. 𥄂, with a bottom horizontal stroke 一 derived from old 𠃊/𠃑 (1 stroke), as seen in old forms of 德(憄悳惪).
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 直(𥄂) zhí ‘(see/know the) straight/true’ combines 十 shí ‘ten’ (right angles), 目 mù ‘eye’ (vision), and 𠃊(𠃑) yǐn ‘hide/hidden’ (crooked); the meaning of 直 is said to relate to 目 ‘seeing/knowing’ the 十 ‘straight/true’ from the 𠃑 ‘crooked/wrong’ (正曲: 矫正枉曲; 措置); formerly wr. 𣖇, also with a shape like 十 over 囧 jiǒng ‘bright (eye)’ (as in 𢝕/悉, 朙/明), but with 木 mù ‘tree/wood’ below (a straight piece of wood; cf. 植).
