The Shuōwén Seal form of 用(𠂦) yòng ‘can put into effect; make use of’ is said to combine 卜 bǔ ‘divination crack’, and 中 zhōng/zhòng ‘center/hit’ (phonosemantic); when the shaman/diviner hits the mark, his perspective/interpretation can be adopted, his recommendations can be implemented, the divination is useful (to the future of the kingdom).
Older graphs associated with 用 might use 中 to depict a ‘receptacle for tallies’ (cf. GSR; 丰/㓞/契), or perhaps the vessel (bamboo tube?) in which 蓍草 ‘milfoil/yarrow sticks’ used in (易) divination were stored (cf. 韇; HDZ does not speculate on the old forms), or a bamboo archery quiver (for arrows); some old graphs suggest 甬 yǒng (cf. below).
