(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character (6 strokes) is an old form (formerly a tree name, see below), re-used as the simple form of the full-form character 機 jī ‘machine’ (16 strokes), replacing the full-form component (12 strokes) with (2 strokes).
Note: In the simple form jī ‘machine’ the full-form component jī (phonetic) becomes jī (phonetic); cf. /, /.
The Shuōwén Seal form of (􀽳) jī ‘alder tree’ () combines (mù) ‘tree’, with (􂠁) jī (phonetic).
Note: Today also / jī ‘table’, formerly wr. (􂠁); formerly also wèi ‘chopping block’.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 機(􁀳) jī ‘trigger mechanism of a crossbow’, combines (mù) ‘tree/wood’, and (􀪾) jǐ (phonosemantic).
Compare: (􀪾) jī ‘subtle signs/omens; crisis/danger/peril’, in which 𢆶(􀪼) yōu ‘fine threads’ (bowstring), and (􂍕) shù ‘garrison/defend’.
Note: Formerly 機(􁀳) jī ‘trigger mechanism of a crossbow’, generalized to ‘looms (weaving); mechanisms/machines/devices; aircraft (flying machines); ingenuity; etc.’.
