(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 类:) The simple-form character 类 (9 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 類 (19 strokes), omitting the right-side full-form component 頁 (9 strokes), and changing the lower-left full-form part 犬 (4 strokes) to 大 (3 strokes).
The full-form character 類, later also wr. 𩔖⿰类頁, was formerly wr. 頪.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 類() lèi ‘kind/type’ combines 犬() quǎn ‘dog’ (as in 状 ‘shape’), and 頪() lèi ‘similar’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 頪(), cf. 頪.
Compare: 颣/纇() lèi ‘knot (in silk)’ (difficult to untangle), in which the component is 糸 instead of 犬.
