The Shuōwén Seal form of 直(𥄂) zhí ‘(see/know) straight/true’ combines 十 shí ‘ten’, 目 mù ‘eye’, and 𠃊(𠃑) yǐn ‘hide/hidden’; the meaning is said to relate to 目 seeing/knowing the 十 straight/true from the 𠃑 crooked/wrong (正曲: 矫正枉曲; 措置); formerly wr. 𣖇, also with a shape like 十 over 囧 jiǒng ‘bright (eye)’ (as in 𢝕/悉, 朙/明), but with 木 mù ‘tree/wood’ below (a straight piece of wood; cf. 植).
Note: (书) 植 is sometimes used to wr. 直 zhí ‘vertical (straight up and down)’, (ant. 横 héng ‘horizontal’); cf. 𣖇(𥄂直).
Compare: 𥃭(𦣼𦣹自) zì ‘self’, 𦣻(𩠐首) shǒu ‘head’, 𦣻(𦣻百) bǎi ‘100’.
