The Shuōwén Seal form of 地 dì ‘earth’ combines (tǔ) ‘earth’, and yě ‘female/pudenda’ (phonosemantic): ‘the great ultimate union of extremes’ (☯) divides into / yáng ‘male/clear/bright/light/heavens’ (⚊), and / yīn ‘female/muddy/dark/heavy/earth’ (⚋), and from their combination arise all of the myriad things; hence, yě ‘female/pudenda’ is the component in 地 dì ‘earth’ (☷); formerly also wr. (𡓬𡒰), with 𧰲 chǐ/chí (phonetic), as in (𢞶), and .
Note: If yě seems like a poor phonetic in 地 dì today, this is because over thousands of years the pronunciations gradually diverged; a thousand years ago the rhymes were rather similar, and more than a thousand years before that the difference may have been something like 地 [dʰia], vs. [dʲa] (GSR), or /ljAj/ vs. 地 /lrjajs/ (Baxter).
