The Shuōwén Seal form of 地 dì ‘earth’ combines 土 (tǔ) ‘earth’, and 也 yě ‘female/pudenda’ (phonosemantic): 太极 ‘the great ultimate union of extremes’ (☯) divides into 阳/陽 yáng ‘male/clear/bright/light/heavens’ (⚊), and 阴/陰 yīn ‘female/muddy/dark/heavy/earth’ (⚋), and from their combination arise all of the myriad things; hence, 也 yě ‘female/pudenda’ is the component in 地 dì ‘earth’ (☷); formerly also wr. 墬(𡓬𡒰), with 𧰲 chǐ/chí (phonetic), as in 㥟(𢞶), and 蠡.
Note: If 也 yě seems like a poor phonetic in 地 dì today, this is because over thousands of years the pronunciations gradually diverged; a thousand years ago the rhymes were rather similar, and more than a thousand years before that the difference may have been something like 地 [dʰia], vs. 也 [dʲa] (GSR), or 也 /ljAj/ vs. 地 /lrjajs/ (Baxter).
