The character 末 mò ‘end’ marks ​木 mù ‘tree’ with ​一 a line above indicating the branch tips; older forms of 末 have different interpretations.
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 末 mò ‘treetop, branch tip’ is said to combine ​木 mù ‘tree’ with an old form of ​上(​丄) ‘up/top’ above.
    Note: The analysis here parallels that of ​本 běn ‘root’, in which the bottom is ​下(​丅) xià ‘down’, emending the received Seal forms based on Táng evidence (DYC).
