The character 然(𤌔) rán ‘roast/cook’ (now ‘thus/natural’) combines 肰 rán ‘dog meat’ (phonosemantic), and 灬(火) huǒ ‘(cooking) fire’; in the old variant 䖄(䕼) the phonetic is variously written 難/㸐, and the ‘fire’ component is sometimes omitted, since it is already an inner part of 難(𩁘).

Note: The old meaning of 然 is now written 燃 ‘burn, roast’ (as in 燃烧 ránshāo), and modern usage is for 然 ‘so, thus, like that, correct; nature/natural’.
