The Shuōwén Seal form of 活(𣴠) guō ‘gurgling/flowing/lively water’ combines 氵(水 shuǐ) ‘water’ (river/stream), and 舌(𠯑) guā ‘fill the mouth’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𣽅(𣿛), with 聒(𦕾): a gurgling/flowing/lively spring/stream/river, source of fresh/potable drinking water (necessity of life).
