The character 录 is today used as the simplified form of 錄 lù ‘to record’, and as a component in simple-form characters (see below); 录 (8 strokes) is a late variant of the older form 彔 (8 strokes); as a component in full-form characters (such as 錄) it is wr. with the older form 彔.
Note: 录 is the simple form, and the full form is 錄; the full-form component 彔 is not commonly used among full-form characters (except as a component, see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 录/彔(𢑗) lù ‘trim/carve wood’ is said to depict a decapitated tree, chopped down and fallen over on its stump, stripped of branches and bark; the top is like 𡕒 the bottom of 夅 jiàng ‘fall’ (降), or like 彐/彑 jì ‘head/snout’ of a butchered/decapitated 彖 tuàn ‘pig’, or like 斤 jīn ‘axe’ (turned, planted in the tree stump); the bottom shape 氺 is as in 𠧳 the old form of 克(𠅏𠅡) kè ‘bear/shoulder’, said to depict a carved/finished wooden beam (stripped of branches and bark).
Compare: 剥/剝(𠚬) bō/bāo ‘split/peel’, in which 录/彔(𢑗) lù (phonosemantic); 录 is sometimes seen as an old wr. of 剥.
The full-form character 錄 lù ‘record’ (formerly syn. with 绿/綠 lǜ ‘golden/greenish-yellow color’) is also wr. 録 (which is the PRC full form; cf. 録).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 録(錄) lù ‘golden/greenish-yellow color’ combines 金 ‘metal/gold’, and 录(𢑗彔) lù (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 绿/綠(緑) lǜ.
Compare: 𢑛, variant of 魅(鬽) mèi ‘ghost/demon’, with the severed 彑 ‘head/snout’ of a 彖 ‘pig’ over its 尾 wěi ‘tail’ (abbrev. phonetic).
Older graphs associated with 录/彔 (HDZ) are linked with 轆, said to depict a 辘轳 lùlu ‘well winch/windlass’ (with bucket, for hoisting water from a well); cf. 韩/韓, 桔槔.
Note: Very old use of 录/彔 as phonetic in 剥/剝 suggests an old initial cluster pr- (Baxter).
