The character 只 zhǐ ‘only’ is an old form (with various old usages), also used in place of 隻 zhī (measure word); today 只 replaces 隻 among simple-form characters (except as a component, cf. 隻).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 只 zhǐ ‘(final part.) finished/exclamation’ combines 口 kǒu ‘mouth’ (spoken gr. funct. word), and 八 bā ‘distinguish’ (as in 兮, 分别).
