The full-form character 隻 zhī (measure word) is an old form, formerly also wr. 只 zhī (measure word); today 隻 is always replaced by 只 among simple-form characters (cf. 只 zhǐ ‘only’, not usually wr. 隻).
Note: The much older usage 隻 huò ‘catch/capture’ is inferred from inscriptions in which old forms like 隻 are assoc. with forms later wr. 蒦, 獲 huò.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 隻 zhī ‘(catch/hold) a single bird’ combines 又 (yòu) ‘hand’, and 隹 zhuī ‘short-tailed bird’ (phonosemantic).
