The character 年() nián ‘ripe grain/crops’ combines hé ‘cereal/grain’, over qiān ‘thousand’ (phonosemantic): a bumper crop of grain, harvesting thousands upon thousands of grains of rice/millet/etc. (年: 年); the harvest comes but once a year, and a rich harvest time marks the whole year's work as a success.
Older graphs associated with 年() have rén ‘person’ below instead of qiān ‘thousand’, but note that itself has as a component; some old forms have /𡈼(𡔛); old (OBI) graphs are assoc. with , as in rěnshóu ‘ripe (of grain)’ (HDZ), cf. .
    Compare: (), (禿), .
“The crop ... the thousand grains. By extension, a year, the time required for a harvest” —Wieger.
    Note: Different ‘year’ words arose in different historical periods: () , () , () 年, () .
