The character 已 (3 strokes) is an old abbrev. of older forms such as 㠯 (5 strokes); the component 厶 is sometimes an old abbrev. of 已, as in 台(􀎟), 辝(􂥅), 允(􁝕).
㠯/已(􂥷) is also written 厶 (as in 台􀎟牟􀌠), and (with 人 added on the right) 以 yǐ. So 已 yǐ ‘already’ is cognate with 以 yǐ ‘use as’. The meanings may be related as follows:
