The Shuōwén Seal form of 目(􀣽) mù ‘eye’ is said to depict a human eye (人的眼睛); the outside enclosure 囗(􁃰) represents the ‘eyelids/lashes’, and inside the double horizontal lines 二(􂘚) represent the ‘iris/pupil’ (瞳子); formerly wr. 𡇡(􀣾) mù ‘eye’, with a shape like 囗(􁃰) representing the ‘face (eye socket)’, and inside a shape 入(􀸾) for the ‘eyebrow/eyelash’ (cf. 睂/眉) over 日(􁈏) ‘eyeball’ (an old abbrev. form that looks like ‘sun’).
