The Shuōwén Seal form of 切 qiē ‘cut/sever’ combines 刀 (dāo) ‘knife’, and 七(𠀁) qī ‘seven’ (phonosemantic); seven is the number of 阳/陽 yáng ‘male/bright’ (⚊), which cuts through the land like a river (☵).
