(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 学:) The simple-form character 学 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 學 (16 strokes), replacing the upper full-form part 𦥯 (13 strokes) with ⿱⺍冖 (5 strokes).
Note: In the simple form 学 the upper full-form part 𦥯 becomes (as in 觉/覺), keeping 冖 but replacing the rest with ⺍ (小 modesty); formerly also abbrev. 斈/𢻯/𡕕.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 学/學() xué ‘study/learn’ is said to be an old abbrev. of 𢽾/斅() xiào/xué ‘teach/learn’ (cf. 觉/覺 awaken), in which the components are 教(敎) jiāo/jiào ‘teach’, 冖(𠘨) mì ‘cover/darkness/ignorance’ (as in 蒙), and 𦥑() jú/jǔ ‘respectful/dispensing/uplifting hands’ (phonosemantic); in old texts 教 and 学/學 were not clearly distinguished.
Note: In 学/學() the top part /𦥯 indicates 𦥑() two hands of the master, dispensing 爻() yáo ‘lines’ (⚊⚋, ⚌⚏…, ☰☷…, ䷀䷁䷂䷃…) from the Book of Changes (易经); in the middle is 冖(𠘨) mì ‘cover/darkness/ignorance’ as in 冡/蒙() méng ‘foolish/ignorant’ (䷃); to uncover the truth, the 子 ‘child/student’ must grasp/master the 爻 changing lines.
Older graphs associated with 学/學 write the lower component as 字 zì ‘schoolhouse; wr. character’ (HDZ), sometimes adding 攴 (as in 斅, 教).
