(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 觉:) The simple-form character 觉 (9 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 覺 (20 strokes), replacing the upper full-form component 𦥯 (13 strokes) with (5 strokes), and replacing the lower full-form component 見 (7 strokes) with its simple form 见 (4 strokes).
Note: In the simple-form character 觉, the upper part (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the simple form 学 (8 strokes), replacing the lower part 子 with the simple form 见.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 觉/覺() jué ‘realize/understand; teach/enlighten’ (醒悟; 启发) combines 见/見() ‘see/vision’ (perception/understanding), and 学/學() xué ‘study/learn’ (abbrev. phonosemantic); when the innocent child receives proper instruction, the darkness/ignorance is displaced, replaced with light/vision/understanding.
