    HDZ: 電 : diàn : ; (, , , ); ; ; ; (, )
(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 電 (13 strokes), omitting the upper full-form component (8 strokes), and lengthening the top of the last stroke (as in old forms).
The full-form character 電 (13 strokes) is itself an abbrev. of old forms such as 𩃓 (16 strokes), replacing the old component 𦥔 (8 strokes) with (5 strokes).
Compare: /𩃓 diàn (as an independent character), vs. / shēn (as the component in 電).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 電(􁿙𩃓) diàn ‘thunderbolt/lightning’ () combines (yǔ) ‘rain’, and /(􂥻𦥔) shēn (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𩃿(􁿚).
Note: The component /(􂥻𦥔􂥽𢑚􂥼𦦀) shēn ‘female/flexible’ here represents the collision of two air masses (as the friction between two hands rubbing together) producing lightning (static electricity).
Note: In the full form 電 the top of the last stroke is omitted (as in ), and the end of that stroke is hooked.
Note: In the simple form the top of (formerly 𦥔) is restored; cf. , .
Compare: /(􁿑) léi ‘thunder’, formerly also wr. 𩇓(􁿒), 𤴐(􁿔).
Compare: (􂖺􂖻𧍺) hóng ‘rainbow’; (􂂀𥪖) lóng ‘dragon’.
Compare: shuǎi ‘swing’; (􂤬) jiǎ ().
