(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 电:) The simple-form character 电 (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 電 (13 strokes), omitting the upper full-form component 雨 (8 strokes), and lengthening the top of the last stroke 乚 (as in old forms).
The full-form character 電 (13 strokes) is itself an abbrev. of old forms such as 𩃓 (16 strokes), replacing the old component 𦥔 (8 strokes) with 申 (5 strokes).
Compare: 电/𩃓 diàn (as an independent character), vs. 电/申 shēn (as the component in 電).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 電(𩃓) diàn ‘thunderbolt/lightning’ (雷光) combines 雨 (yǔ) ‘rain’, and 电/申(𦥔) shēn (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𩃿().
Note: The component 电/申(𦥔𢑚𦦀) shēn ‘female/flexible’ here represents the collision of two air masses (as the friction between two hands rubbing together) producing lightning (static electricity).
Note: In the full form 電 the top of the last stroke 乚 is omitted (as in 龟), and the end of that stroke 乚 is hooked.
