The Shuōwén Seal form of 始 shǐ ‘begin’ combines 女 (nǚ) ‘woman’, and 台 sì (phonetic).
Note: The upper component of 台 sì is 巳 sì ‘fetus/embryo’ (inverted); 台 formerly wrote 始 (马王堆); 台/始 ‘give birth; be born’ → ‘begin’.
Bronze forms assoc. with 始 are said to have 司 sī (phonetic), sometimes with 㠯 added; cf. 嗣 sì ‘inherit’ (as in 后嗣 ‘descendant/offspring’).
