(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 问:) The Shuōwén Seal form of 问(問) wèn ‘ask/inquire’ combines 门(門) mén ‘door’ (phonetic) and 口 (kǒu) ‘mouth’.
If understood as 口 words spoken outside the 门 door, then 门 mén may be seen as both phonetic and signific (phonosemantic).
