From 亻(人 rén) ‘person’ and 也 (yě ‘also’). may have been phonetic (the ancient sounds, now tā and yě, were similar). However, ‘he, she, or it’ was once written 它, then , and then 他. So may have been a simplification of 佗.
The character 他 (5 strokes) modifies the old form 佗 (7 strokes), replacing the old right-side component 它(􂗿) with 也(􂍅) in order to specify certain senses formerly wr. 它, cf. (􁖢).
In spoken Chinese, pronouns have no gender. The single word means ‘he, she, or it’. Only in modern times did somebody start writing for tā ‘she’. 它 tā now means ‘it’ exclusively. Cp. 牠,祂.
Note: is a relatively recent (1,000 year-old) form (SBGY); the much older old form 它(􂗿) was later also wr. 佗(􁖢), though the old primary meaning of 佗 was different; cf. 它(􂗿), 也(􂍅), similar in the Seal.
Note: In spoken Chinese pronouns have no gender, but in written Chinese gender may be specified; cf. ‘he’, 她 tā ‘she’, 它 tā ‘it’.
Compare: 他/佗, 她/𡛥, 它, /㸰, 祂/𥙇.
