The character 最 zuì ‘most’ (formerly ‘most superior warrior’) combines 日(冃) mào ‘hat; offend’ (as in 冒, 冒犯, 冡/蒙, 帽), and 取 qǔ ‘take’ (phonosemantic): to seize/take sth forcefully.
    Note: The old meaning 最 zuì ‘most superior warrior’ relates to old 取 qǔ ‘take (the most) enemy ears (from corpses, in tallying battle casualties)’; 取 seems to be phonetic in 最 (XK); cf. 撮 cuō ‘cloth/silk hat band’.
