(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 阶:) The simple-form character 阶 (6 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 階 (11 strokes), replacing the full-form component 皆 (9 strokes) with 介 (4 strokes).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 階() jiē ‘steps/stairs’ combines 阝(𨸏阜) fù ‘terraced hillside’, and 皆() jiē ‘all/harmony’ (phonosemantic); cf. 偕().
Note: In the simple form 阶, the full-form component 皆 is replaced with 介 jiè (phonetic).
