(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character yàng ‘manner/style/kind’ (10 strokes) is an old character, re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 樣 (15 strokes), replacing the full-form component (11 strokes) with its top part (6 strokes).
Note: Both and 樣 are old characters, formerly with different usages; 樣 yàng ‘manner/style/kind’ is an old usage; cf. / below, and yáng ‘foreign’.
The character yáng ‘wooden post’ (part of sericulture frame) combines (mù) ‘tree/wood’, and yáng (phonetic).
Note: The old meaning yáng ‘wooden post’ is obsolete, and today the reading is yàng ‘manner/style/kind’, used as the simple form of 樣 yàng (note the tone difference, formerly yáng, today yàng).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 樣(􀼩) xiàng ‘acorn’ () combines (mù) ‘tree/wood’, and (􁾪) yàng ‘long-flowing river’ (phonosemantic): the hardwood (long-lasting) oak nut; also wr. , and later .
Note: Formerly 樣 xiàng ‘acorn’ (modern lìguǒ ‘acorn’), formerly also wr. / xiàng ( xiàngshù ‘oak’).
