The Shuōwén Seal form of 史(​㕜) shǐ ‘official historian/envoy’ is said to combine ​又 yòu ‘right hand’, and ​中 zhōng ‘the exact middle/center’: to grasp ongoing/passing/past events, and to record/convey them accurately/faithfully/truthfully.
    Compare: 史 shǐ ‘historian/history’; ​事(​𠭏) shì ‘event’; ​吏 lì ‘officer’; ​使 shǐ/shì ‘command/dispatch/envoy’; these are all said to be related variants (HDZ), perhaps for cognate morphemes; cf. ​事/​剚 zì ‘establish/stab’.
