One monosyllabic entry in The ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary (namespace Ci):

²bǐ [] {A} n. penb.f.technique of writing/calligraphy/drawing ►¹gōngbǐ 工筆write ►dàibǐ 代筆m.stroke (in writing Ch. characters)(for money/painting/etc.)

    HDZ: 筆 : bǐ : ; , ; , ; (ant. ); ; () , ; () ; (); ()
(Explanation from the entry for the simple form :) The simple-form character bǐ ‘writing brush’ (10 strokes) is a traditional abbrev. of the full-form character 筆 (12 strokes), dating back to at least the Song dynasty; it combines zhú ‘bamboo’ over máo ‘hair’, since ‘writing brushes’ are made by attaching a bamboo handle to animal fur/bristles (rabbit/goat/pig/etc.).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 筆(􀡇) bǐ ‘(bamboo) writing brush’ combines zhú ‘bamboo’ (handle), and (􀡆) yù ‘writing brush’ (phonosemantic).
Note: 筆 is said to be a Qín Dynasty word, syn. with older yù ‘writing brush’ (HDZ).
    Compare: (􀡆) yù ← MC /Øiuet/; /筆(􀡇) bǐ ← MC /pjet/ (SBGY); 𦘒(􀡀) niè ← MC /ɳiap/.
