(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 页:) The simple-form character 页 (6 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 頁 (9 strokes), replacing the lower full-form shape 貝 (7 strokes) with 贝 (4 strokes).
Note: In the modern forms 页/頁, the bottom looks like 贝/貝 ‘cowrie/money’, but 贝/貝 is not a traditional component of 页/頁 (money was not on their mind).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 页/頁(𩑋) xié ‘head’ combines 𦣻() shǒu ‘head’, and 儿() rén ‘(legs of a) person’: the head (top) atop the person.
Note: Today mainly 页/頁 yè ‘page’, formerly wr. 䈎(), and later 葉(), cf. 叶.
Note: As a radical/component, properly 页/頁 xié ‘head’, but today commonly 页部 yèbù, and formerly even 頁/䭬 qǐ (DYC).
Note: In the full form 頁 the lower part 儿 of the Seal is wr. like 八, but with the 2nd stroke as 丶, not ㇏ or 乚.
Note: DYC says that the received SW texts were emended (tampered with) and that 頁(𩑋) xié (SW rad. 324) originally was listed after 首(𩠐) shǒu (SW rad. 328) under 䭬() qǐ ‘kowtow’ (the only other character classified under 首) as a variant of 䭬; he suspects that 頁 was not originally a SW radical at all, or perhaps it was not a radical in that position (it and all 93 characters it now classifies came after 首 instead of before it); likewise, he says that 𦣻() shǒu (SW rad. 325), glossed in SW as a Seal variant of the old form 𩠐() shǒu (SW rad. 328), was originally listed under that character; given this confusion in the pagination of SW, it seems ironic that 頁 later came to be used for 葉 yè ‘leaf/page (of a book/album)’.
