The Shuōwén Seal form of 兔 tù ‘rabbit’ derives from old pictographs depicting a rabbit, with the ears/head above, squatting on its hind legs, with a final stroke/dot for the tail.
“It represents a hare when it is squatting, with its tail perked up.” —Wieger.
Compare: (𣬋) chuò ‘hare’ (in which the four feet/legs are drawn); yì ‘escape’.
Compare: miǎn ‘avoid’ (which has one less stroke).
