The Shuōwén Seal form of 民 mín ‘people’ is an old obscure character, explained relative to the old variant form ​𠘽, which is however not explained in the received SW text; DYC guesses that it depicts sprouting plants (​萌: ​氓/​甿 ‘common people’).
    Older graphs associated with 民 ‘conquered/enslaved people’ are said to depict the blinding of the left eye of enslaved captives (enslaved/marked by blinding); some old graphs look rather like old forms of ​直 (HDZ).
    “[民] Character analogous to ​氏 shì clan, family, both of doubtful analysis” —Karlgren(AD).
    Note: 民, ​氐 and ​氏 are not clearly distinguished in compound characters; cf. ​氐.
