The Shuōwén Seal form of 单/ dān ‘great (beast)’ combines xuān ‘cry/roar’ (phonosemantic), and a shape (⿱), short for / měng ‘frog/amphibian’.
Note: is an old wr. of /(𪓸) tuó ‘alligator’, and of / zhàn ‘battle/war’, phonosemantic in both; SW records that alligator skin was used to make (war) drums.
Compare: /() shòu ‘beast’, with curved horns, not xuān ‘cry/roar’.
Compare: 𬶛/ tuó ‘alligator’, formerly wr. /(𪓸); 𬶛/ shàn ‘Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus)’.
In the simple form 单 the full-form component of is reduced to , just as / simplifies .
“[] Single, alone; only; odd (in number); single sheet, a list, a bill, a slip” —Karlgren(AD).
Note: Lindqvist proposed that 单 may have represented hunting stones tied with a rope (cf. bolas/boleadoras); cf. dàn as in zǐdàn ‘bullet’.
    Compare: /(𢎟) tán/dàn ‘shoot/projectile’.
