(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 树:) The simple-form character 树 (9 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 樹 (16 strokes), replacing the full-form component 尌 (12 strokes) with a shape like 对 (5 strokes).
Note: 对 as a simple-form component corresponds to the full-form component 尌 (the left part 壴 becomes 又); 对 does not replace 尌 in any other simple-form characters; cf. full form 廚, in which 壴 in the full-form component 尌 becomes 豆 in the simple form 厨 (that inner component ⿰豆寸 is not an independent character).
Note: 对 duì ‘toward’ as an independent simple-form character corresponds to the full-form character 對 (unrelated to 尌, though somewhat similar in structure)
The Shuōwén Seal form of 树/樹() shù ‘tree’ (grown up straight) combines 木() mù ‘tree’, and 尌() shù ‘stand up straight’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𡬾(), in which the component 木 overwrites the top part 之(𡳿) of 壴(𧯛) in 尌().
Note: The component 尌() shù ‘stand/set up (straight/vertical)’ is later wr. 树/樹 (树立).
